Drift, Lap 3 ~ The Story Continues

Drift, Lap 3

~Cristofer Smith

Note: Drift is a racing word ~ stemming from my motorcycle racing days, always fun!

Picking up with our last drift we now have made the journey to get into the active/athletic clothing arena, which has taken me through many diversified enterprises, distant lands, with many cultures. The beginning was in 1992 with a friend and his family who were apparel manufactures in downtown Los Angeles. One evening Edward and I were having some fun after school and started talking about launching our own brand that would be more creative driven by combing active and Cali beach look. Needless to say we didn’t have money so we managed to parlay my student loan of $1,600.00 into purchasing some used sewing machines and a cutting tool.

From there we built our cutting table out of plywood and began to learn how to make pattern and markers from Edwards Mom. Without Edwards Mom we were totally lost and would have run out of cash before opening our doors. Anyway, to make a long story short I’ll never forget the learning curve and all the wonderful souls that helped us achieve our goals.

So now the design and manufacturing journey began with our emphasis on private label. As we learned and began to help our customers with styles and creating colors with their brands I found my niche to design not only active lifestyle clothing, but also the textiles became a new fetish and passion of mine. I began to meet people from Asia (Taiwan) whom were recommended to me and they were kind, thoughtful and felt my passion and need to learn everything about designing and making textiles. I even assisted in developing new textiles for the Taiwan textile companies after many years.

I would like to hear from anyone, anywhere, anytime to know we are doing our job right for you, our customer. Please email me at and if you have a suggestion, or a design you want to experience please remember: I am all ears!

As I wrap up drift #3 I will bring you more about the journey into Eco-products and the science of them in our next drift.

Stay Tuned!
